Fitness Myth: Sweating means calorie loss

Many people believe that an increased amount of sweat corresponds with an increased physical activity level, and an increased rate of calorie loss. A good workout is often associated with a shirt covered in sweat, as well as excessive body odour and a red face. However, all of these factors are independent of the use of calories.

When the body sweats, it is evaporating water off the surface of the skin in order to cool the body. This is why the body sweats more during hot days rather than cool ones. In theory, it is possible to perform an entire exercise session without sweating if the conditions are cool enough. It is also possible to completely drench a shirt with sweat without performing any exercise should the conditions be hot enough.

When performing exercise, it is vital to ensure that one doesn’t forgo their normal routines and goals in order to facilitate the heat or cool. While it can be harder to train in hot conditions, as long as one keeps hydrated throughout the session it is possible to maintain the high standards required to continue improving.

Aspartame - is it unsafe for consumption?

Artificial sweeteners such as aspartame are found in over 6000 diet products, beverages and pharmaceuticals. They replace sucrose in foods, enhancing flavour while reducing calories and the risk of dental caries. As obesity has become a major public health issue, more individuals of all ages are choosing to use these products. However, their safety has been controversial. Aspartame received a lot of media attention in 2006 when a report claimed that aspartame was a multi-potential carcinogenic agent. As a response, further investigations were undertaken into the effects of aspartame on health because if found to be true, then food standards would have had to be revised. These epidemiological studies provided no evidence to support an association between aspartame and cancer in any tissue but pointed out that risks associated with foetal exposure were not evaluated. Currently, the food safety authority Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) and other international regulatory agencies have approved aspartame for general use in a range of foods including tabletop sweeteners, carbonated soft drinks, yoghurt and confectionery.

As a food additive, aspartame is required to be identified by its class name (i.e. sweetener) and by an individual name or code number. The additive number for aspartame is 951. It also needs to be labeled because aspartame is unsuitable for individuals with Phenylketonuria (PKU) since aspartame is broken down into the amino acid phenylalanine.

In summary, FSANZ has concluded that, in Australia, aspartame is a safe food additive, and levels in food are well below those at which adverse health effects might occur.

Lisa Seiler

Hi my name is Lisa Seiler and I have just completed a double degree in Human Movement / Nutrition & Dietetics at Queensland University of Technology. Currently I am doing voluntary hours here at Fitnance to achieve the required total amount of working with the apparently healthy population so I can get accredited with Exercise & Sport Science Australia (ESSA). I have finished all my other practical placements where I worked with clients who had spinal cord injuries, back pain and other musculoskeletal conditions. My latest prac was at a cardiac rehabilitation centre which I really enjoyed. Taking blood pressures while patients were rowing or walking on the treadmill was definitely a challenge and I believe a useful skill. In terms of my career, I can see myself working as an exercise physiologist or dietitian (or both) in a multi-disciplinary team where a holistic approach to health and well-being is valued. I would also love to combine the knowledge and skills gained in both degrees and work with children to achieve a healthier and more energetic young population.

As far as my hobbies are concerned, I’ve done ballet, jazz, Latin and ballroom dancing, figure-skating, kickboxing, and Tae kwon do in the past. These days I usually go to the gym for a workout. In my free time I enjoy inline-skating, going for walks outside, and reading.

Zumba at Fitnance

Come join the fitness revolution at Fitnance. Zumba is a form of exercise which combines dancing with cardiovascular exercise, and is fun for all involved. All ages and fitness levels are welcome. Classes begin at 6:30pm on Mondays, $15 per person. For enquiries call Diana Moncada at 0423594752.

Best Practice Personal Training looking for Personal Trainer.
An opportunity has come up for the right person to join the Best Practice Personal Training team in the Fortitude Valley Studio.

You will be working for a boutique style studio operating right in the middle of the Valley. We are unfortunately losing our full time instructor and now looking for someone special to fit this role with a view for managing the studio within 1-2 years and other immediate opportunities which will make this an interesting job to be in.

The owner is prepared to train the right person over the next 1-2 years to move from full time trainer to full time manager. But don't worry this role will still involve hands on training so you will never lose touch with client contact.

The existing and immediate role however is for a full time gig. 38 hours per week, split shift. 5.30am starts and 7.30pm finishes and Saturday morning work. This will really suit someone who lives close by as the split shift is not for the squeamish. Ideally you are someone who has boundless energy and will see opportunity galore in this role.

The salary range is 45-55K+ depending on experience. There will training in development as part of this role as well. I believe in having fun, doing the job to the highest level and continual learning as life is better that way.

I have three part time trainers and am looking for the 'one' to take the full time role and run with it.

You can check out our website and get a feel for how we are a little different. www.bestpracticept.com.au

Power Bands and Bracelets: Do they work?

What is a power bracelet?
Power bracelets are simply a bracelet containing either a magnet or composed of materials such as copper or titanium. Power bands contain Mayer holograms that supposedly resonate with your body’s natural frequency. Power bracelet/band usage has recently been on the rise due to their claim to “regulate the body's natural electric currents through cell ionization, thereby promoting muscle relaxation and providing relief from pain, stress and fatigue and improving blood circulation”. Quite a bold claim in light of the very vague description we are given in how it works.

Cell ionisation, what does this mean?
Cell ionisation can refer to a couple of definitions. One refers to the splitting apart of the molecular structure of the cell. This in itself is dangerous as cells undergoing ionisation can potentially be permanently damaged. The other is the effect on the regulation and exchange of ions (K+, Na+, Cl-) between the cell membrane and extracellular fluid. If magnetic bands are meant to improve performance the first definition is very unlikely. As for the second definition, there is little to no research that explains a relation between a power bracelet and its affect on these systems.

Is there any research supporting power bracelets?
Other then testimonials from sports stars in various disciplines, which are simply subjective, there is not much to go by in terms of research. Opinions are generally of the consensus that the bands create a placebo effect. The closest associated research is related to magnetic therapy and arthritis and even then results suggest that improvements were nothing more than a placebo effect. Since power bracelets/Bands are a reasonably new “technology” more research certainly needs to be done. In particular randomised trials should be of particular use in identifying a definite placebo effect. Specific research should also be done on the cellular reactions to various bands to see if there is indeed an improvement in ion regulation within cells. This will be more useful rather than having a claim that it “optimises the body’s natural energy flow”.

So is it worth wearing one?
At this point in time power bracelets/bands are a bit in the dark but the general opinion at this point is they do nothing more than promote a placebo effect. However in saying that the placebo effect is still a positive one and any improvement in performance is good. In my opinion I would take it as a grain of salt at this point until better research is done. The bands do no harm so there is no issues in wearing one the only question is are you willing to spend $60+.

Fitness Myth: More is better

Many people believe that more exercise performed will always lead to an improvement. However, there is a limit to the amount of exercise that one can perform before experiencing the effects of "overtraining". The human body requires rest between exercise bouts in order to recover from the exertion undertaken in each session, as well as to recharge mentally. The negative effects of overtraining can include sickness, a decrease in performance, injury, depression and a loss in motivation.

In order to prevent overtraining, each exercise program should have adequate rest periods between each session. This is known as periodization. Adequate periodization will prevent overtraining and allow each person to perform to their maximum ability.

Corporate Fitness Training

The benefits of implementing a corporate wellness program include:

•improved corporate image
•financial benefits for the company
•health benefits for the staff

The financial benefits for a company are:
improved staff productivity
more alert staff
more alert staff work better together
reduced absenteeism and sick leave
increased motivation
increased energy levels
reduction in smoking

The benefits for the staff are: reduced blood pressure, reduced cholesterol levels, reduced obesity, better posture, decreased stress levels, reduced coronary problems.

One of the biggest benefits of corporate fitness is reduced staff turn over. Staff turn over is a major cost to a company, and is estimated to cost approximately 40% of the first years salary of the employee.

Most people spend a significant proportion of their time at work so work is an ideal place to promote increased physical fitness.

Personal Trainers and Park Registration

Due to the increasing numbers of Personal Trainers using parks and other outdoor spaces for training some councils are enforcing licensing systems. The Brisbane City Council has no plans to do so, however Cairns and the Sunshine Coast already have systems. The Gold Coast City Council is introducing a system from next year.
Councils say the reasons for the licensing are about public liability issues.
OR is it a money grab?

Should healthy people be rewarded?

Should healthy people be rewarded?

If 61 percent of Australia is overweight or obese and increasing each year, shouldn’t the minority (the healthy population) get an added benefit for staying trim. In 2008 the total annual cost of obesity for both children and adults in Australia, including health system costs, productivity and carers costs, was estimated to be around $58 billion of tax payers hard earned money. Why should healthy people be charged for staying healthy and using less government resources? By implementing a reverse health scheme with a focus on health promotion, encouragement and reward rather than just cleaning up the mess once it’s already been made benefits the population doing the right thing.

Ideas anyone?

One proposal could be a healthy population reward scheme to reward good health. An annual health checkup would determine your health status with simple BMI and fitness tests. Once found healthy a decreased tax threshold would be rewarded.

Prue Sinclair: Prac Student

I’m Prue Sinclair and I am a third year Human Movement student from QUT. In two weeks I am finished university and am off overseas for a while to pursue my crazy childhood dreams of dive instructing, teaching English and working in a zoo in Borneo. I enjoy the rehabilitation side of my degree as well as the personal contact with clients. In my future I see the outdoors, the tropics, laughter, and health… Time will no doubt tell.

Well Done to the FIT's competing at the NOOSA Triathlon
