Powerlifting

Congratulations to Katrina Robertson for being accepted into the powerlifting Hall of Fame!!
Katrina Robertson
When Clermont’s Katrina Robertson broke both legs in a serious motorcycle accident soon after finishing school in 1977, she was told she would never play sport again. In fact, so bad were her injuries, doctors feared at one stage that she may even lose a leg to amputation.
Sports-mad Katrina was shattered. Her ultimate dream had always been to represent Australia at one of the many sports she loved – swimming, athletics, basketball, netball, rowing and tennis.
After spending two years in and out of hospital and trying to learn to walk again, Katrina was finally told to find a career that allowed her to remain sedentary.
She began nursing studies at the Mackay Base Hospital in 1981, and later, in 1986, was accepted into university to study psychology. This surprised Katrina’s family and friends, as she had always been too busy having fun and playing sport to ever focus on study or schoolwork
But Katrina was determined and proved her commitment by passing all subjects with straight As. She then moved to Mackay permanently to open a private psychology practice.
Despite succeeding with her nursing and psychology studies, Katrina felt something was missing.
In 1994, she saw an article in Mackay’s Daily Mercury newspaper about the World Masters Games that would be held in Brisbane later that year.
Katrina decided, against medical advice, to try to get fit and participate at the games. She started training with Ken Ware at a local Mackay gym and by the end of the year had won two gold and two silver World Masters medals while competing in the discus, shot put, hammer throw and weight pentathlon.
After the World Masters success, Ken taught Katrina the basics of the squat, bench press and deadlift, and the pair headed off to a powerlifting competition in Townsville.
Katrina, by her own admission a powerlifting novice, broke the Australian deadlift record (202.5kg) in her first competition. She was, of course, hooked.
Katrina, in the true tradition of amateur sports, started training in an old gym next to a cane paddock, with her 70-year-old dad as coach, and without any financial support or sponsorship. She worked full-time in her psychology practice to make sure she could pay the bills.
Over the next five years, Katrina broke 31 Australian, 12 Oceania, 18 Commonwealth and seven world records.
In 1997, aged 37, she won the Women’s World Super Heavyweight Powerlifting Championship in South Africa, where she broke three world records and was dubbed “the strongest woman in the world” by the news media.
Katrina was Mackay’s ‘Daily Mercury Sport Star of the Year’ in 1996 and 1997 and was inducted into the Sporting Hall of Fame in 2001. She first appeared in the Guinness Book of Records in 1998.
Katrina retired from competitive lifting in 2001 but continues to be active in sport and is a regular on the public speaking circuit. She has also continued in her psychology practice, where she specialises in the health, sports and rehabilitation areas.

Jets Win Thriller After Siren
QRL Media
17/07/2011 10:48:28 PM
IPSWICH five-eighth Brendon Lindsay calmly slotted a penalty goal after the final siren today to hand the Jets a remarkable 20-19 victory over a stunned Redcliffe outfit at Dolphin Oval.
In an amazing finish that captivated fans from both teams, the Jets conjured a miracle escape just moments after Dolphins halfback Dan Cross had seemingly booted his team to victory with a field goal in the final minute.
But within a few dramatic seconds, Redcliffe’s 19-18 advantage slipped through their fingers after the Dolphins failed to re-gather the kick off.
Redcliffe conceded a penalty after a Dolphins player touched the ball in an off-side position following the handling error.
As Lindsay stepped up to take the penalty attempt 20 metres out and just to the left of the posts, the home crowd voiced its disapproval.
But Lindsay put the ball between the uprights, sending the Ipswich players into frenzied celebrations.
Proud Ipswich skipper Keiron Lander conceded there was an element of good fortune about the final play of the match.
“Definitely, but we made our own luck. The boys chased hard off the kick off and we kept going through and we put pressure on them,” Lander said.
The tough lock forward said the Jets were “growing in confidence” each week.
The last-gasp win came at a crucial time for the Jets, who hold fourth spot on percentages from Souths Logan.
Redcliffe remains in second spot on 24 points but will be ruing a missed opportunity today.
The Dolphins led 12-0 early and 18-6 at half-time.
Redcliffe forwards Dave Hala and Chris Farrell were outstanding in the middle, while livewire five-eighth Joe Bond had the crowd on its feet on the stroke of half-time with a brilliant length of the field try.
With his side leading 12-6 but under huge pressure on its own goal line in the closing stages of the first half, Bond took an intercept against the run of play.
The former Devils star sprinted down the right flank and evaded Jets winger Jarrod McInally to score Redcliffe’s third try of the half.
Redcliffe dominated field position in the opening 20 minutes of the second half, but couldn’t land the knock-out blow despite the Jets being reduced to 12 men following the sin-binning of centre Brendon Marshall.
The visitors gradually grew in confidence and when Residents back-rower Lorenzo Maafu scored with 15 minutes to go and Lindsay converted, the Jets had a glimmer of hope.
Their chances of staging a come-from-behind win increased dramatically when McInally scored after the Dolphins fumbled a bomb with six minutes remaining.
Lindsay knocked over the conversion to level proceedings at 18-18.
But Lindsay wasn’t on target with his next opportunity with the boot when he pushed a field goal attempt to the right of the posts.
Redcliffe made no mistake at the other end, with Cross’ field goal splitting the uprights and raising a huge cheer around the ground.
The field goal came after the Dolphins snatched the ball from the hands of Ipswich fullback Luke Walker with a tremendous one-on-one steal.
But Walker and his teammates were able to breathe a huge sigh of relief when they watched Lindsay boot the match-winning penalty at the other end of the field.
